Take the first step toward realizing their dreams of space travel and exploration by taking photos
One is a topic appropriate for the coming space age.
★About stratosphere
The stratosphere lies at an altitude of about 10 to 50 km above ground.
The atmospheric pressure is 1/3 (300 hPa, 10 km) to 1/1000 (1 hPa, 47 km) of that on the ground.
The temperature varies depending on the altitude, but at 10 km it is around -56°C, at 30 km it is about -70°C, at 50 km it is about -2 to -4°C, and once the altitude passes 50 km the temperature starts to decline again, reaching -70 to -80°C at an altitude of about 85 km.
By bringing together the areas of expertise of each high school student, they were able to realize their dream. That’s amazing!
In addition, in order to reach the stratosphere, they needed special materials, so they approached various companies to provide them, started a crowdfunding site to raise funds, and also applied to the government to launch the balloon.
We can’t help but be impressed not only by their skills but also by their energy.
The data from this experiment is being analyzed now, but he said he plans to share the data with the juniors for their launch and with other schools if they ask for it.
I thought that the attempt in October 2024 was the first time that high school students sent a balloon up into the stratosphere and took photographs of the Earth.
Then I found a high school student who had done a similar experiment 12 years ago, i.e., 2012.
I was also surprised to find that the high school was in the same city in Nagano Prefecture as my high school 50 years ago.

Connecting the baton of A-bomb survivors
In conjunction with the Nobel Peace Prize award ceremony for the Japan Confederation of A- and H-bomb Sufferers Organizations (Hidankyo), four high school student peace ambassadors who will be dispatched to Oslo, Norway, held a press conference in Hiroshima on October 18th. The four will participate in the ceremony from December 8th to 12th.
Natsuki Kai (17), a second-year student at Hiroshima Municipal High School, a fourth-generation atomic bomb survivor, said that she wanted to convey her great-grandfather’s wish that “no one should ever have to go through this experience again.”
Hina Shimazu (16), a second-year student at Kyushu Gakuin High School in Kumamoto City, said, “I want to discuss nuclear abolition with young people.”
Rin Tsuda (16), a second-year student at Nagasaki Prefectural High School, said with emphasis, “I will fulfill my responsibility to pass on the baton from the atomic bombing survivors.”
Yuka Ohara (17), a second-year student at the same prefectural high school, said, “I will bring back what I have learned to Japan and use it in my future activities.”
